The finishing touch on any movie is the music. Without it a scene can seem lifeless. With the right music a scene becomes memorable.
Austin Lawrence composed the music for Table 47 after we watched the film together. “It was very important to us to let the actors do their acting, and have the music support it in the most minimalistic way possible,” Lawrence said. “The music for Table 47 wasn’t designed to be a stand-alone score, but a subtle texture, just like lighting or the ambient noise. One of the many humble pieces of a big creative puzzle.”
You’ve no doubt seen clips of how a movie is scored in Hollywood. There’s a huge orchestra and the conductor watches the movie while conducting the musicians. Didn’t quite happen that way in our movie.
Austin went to work on the computer, writing the music and playing it on various instruments, then mixing it into tracks we could use. He emailed us audio files with precise instructions, “Lay this clip in 14 minutes, 28 seconds and 6 frames into the movie.” We would then tell him if we liked it or it needed changing.
Looking back, Austin said, “The most challenging part of this, for the director, writer and myself, was trying to find that little Italian restaurant where we went to to celebrate! Smart phone GPS’s are not all they are cracked up to be. But fortunately, it was the only technical difficulty we faced.”
Austin has moved from Colorado to Los Angeles, working for directors and game developers. A big gain for Hollywood!
